office of the judge against Jn Belknappe of Earls Colne he was to purge himself under the hands of six neighbours and he failed in his purgation and therefore he was declared to be guilty and ordered to make a public confession in the market place of Coggeshall on the sabbath and to certify this afterwards the judge receiving his petition that this was an excessive punishment and on his statement that he had received punishment from the justices of the peace admitted that he had been sufficiently punished and therefore dismissed him
