in the name of god amen 1.7.1561 I Jn Nichols of Colne Engaine the elder etc do ordain and make this my present testament firstly I commit my soul to almighty god etc item I bequeath to the curate of Colne aforesaid for the time being 12d to be paid by mine executor hereafter ordained and appointed item I will that my executor shall bestow and give among the people that shall be at burial 20s item I will that my said executor should shall bestow in mending the high way within the said parish of Colne where most need shall require 5s item I give and bequeath to Jn Nichols my son all that my tenement and land of Sparvers situate and being in the parish of Colne aforesaid called Hossetes by the licence of the lord to have and to hold the said tenement with the appurtenances to the said Jn and his assigns and it is my very will mind and intent that the said Jn shall enter into the said tenement with the appurtenances at the feast of st michael the archangel next after my decease whensoever it shall please god to call me item I give and bequeath to the said Jn Nichols my son 10li of lawful money of England to be paid to the said Jn or his assigns within one year next after my decease item I give to the said Jn two of my carthorses one of his own choosing and the other at the delivery of my son Robt item I give and bequeath to Robt my son that my tenement called Randes wherein I now dwell with all my pastures lands and meadows with the appurtenances to the same belonging which I hold of the manor of Brompton in Colne aforesaid at the will of the lord two crofts of land called Cocksals containing by estimation 12a item one croft called Awlen Field containing by estimation with one croft called Shortland and a meadow thereto belonging 31a item one field called Whislenland containing by estimation 20a item one tenement called Crofts containing by estimation 30a to have and to hold the said tenements with the appurtenances to the said Robt and his heirs which shall be of his body lawfully begotten and if it happens the said Robt to decease without issue of his body lawfully begotten which defend then I will and it is my very mind and intent that my son Jn Nichols and my son Thos Nichols shall have the tenements with the appurtenances before to the said Robt bequeathed to be delivered between the said Jn and Thos to remain to them and to their heirs of their body lawfully begotten item I give to Thos Nichols my son all that my tenement and croft of land called Old Richard containing by estimation 1a and a half being in Colne aforesaid to have and to hold the said tenement with the appurtenances to the said Thos and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten provided always and it is my full mind and intent that Margt my wife shall have her chamber within my said house wherein I dwell during her lifetime and it is my mind that she shall have there the chamber wherein I now lie with the implements so to the same belonging and all the stuff being in the same with washing meat and drink fire and other necessities and every year 40s during her life item I give to Elyne my daughter 40s and to every child that she hath and that my son Jn hath I give 6s8d of lawful money of England if it happens any of them the said children to decease before they accomplish their ages of sixteen years at which age I will that it shall be paid I will that the other surviving shall have the other so deceased and if it happens all the said children to decease before they accomplish their said ages then I will that the said legacy shall remain in the hands of my executor to be disposed as his discretion the residue of all my goods chattels after my debts paid and this my present testament fulfilled I give to my executor and of this my last will I make my son Robt my sole and only executor and I will that my executor shall give every one of my godchildren that be within the parish of Colne aforesaid 8d and I utterly renounce any wills and testaments and all other executors before this time by me made or ordained and I am fully minded to have this stand for my last will and testament in witness whereof I have set my seal and subscribed my name the day and year first above written others being witnesses Jn Potter the elder Jn Potter the younger Jn Potter Jn Spurgyne Jas Abot scriptor
