in the name of god amen the 9.1.1623 I Nich Borley of Colne Engaine in the county of Essex yeoman being sick in body yet in good and perfect remembrance I do thank god therefore do declare and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following first and principally I surrender and bequeath my soul into the hands of almighty god and his only son jesus christ my only saviour and redeemer by whose precious bloodshedding upon the cross I do steadfastly hope to have remission of all my sins my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be decently buried according to my degree item my will and meaning is that my executors hereafter named and appointed shall have and take the issues and profits of all my freehold land in the parish of Halsted in the said county for the term of one year after my decease and shall pay out of the profits thereof to my godson Wm Ruggles the son of Wm Ruggles of Maplested in the said county 20s and after the end of the said year I do give and bequeath the same land with the appurtenances to Wm Goose of Lachindon in the said county my sister's son and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten or to be begotten and for default of such issue then I do give and bequeath the same land with the appurtenances unto Jn Philebrowne of Messing in the said county and to his heirs forever item I do give and bequeath my copyhold tenement with the appurtenances and the yard being freehold with the said tenement now used lying in Earls Colne in the said county now in the tenure or occupation of Jn Pennocke to Hen Makin my sister's son and to his heirs forever item I do give unto my kinsman Wm Burley of London barber 20li of lawful money of England to be paid within one year after my decease and to my sister Frances Parker of Great Dunmowe in the said county 10li of like money to be paid within one year and an half after my decease and to my sister Joan 4 0s to be paid within one year after my decease and to Ann Burley my goddaughter and kinswoman 40s to be paid in one year after my decease and to Luke Bennall my wife's grandchild 7li of like money to be paid within one year and an half after my decease and to Mary Bennall his sister 3li of like money to be paid within one year after my decease and to Kath Bennall her sister 10li of like money to be paid within two years after my decease and to Eliz Prentice and Rose Prentice daughters of Thos Prentice my wife's son and to Wm Prentice son of Wm Prentice and Eliz his wife my wife's daughter 20s apiece to be paid within two years after my decease item I do give unto the poor people of Colne Engaine aforesaid 20s to be distributed at the discretion my executors item all the rest and residue of my good and chattels whatsoever corn cattle implements of household and implements of husbandry I do give and bequeath to Mary now my wife and the said Jn Philebrowne to be equally parted and divided between them whom I do ordain and make executors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal the day and year first above written read sealed and published as his last will and testament in the presence of Simon Ive mark Edw Prentis mark Wm Browne mark Nich Borley
