in the name of god amen I Mary Newman of Earls Colne in the county of Essex spinster do make and ordain this my last will and testament this 4.9.1742 in manner and form following first I commend my soul into the hands of almighty god trusting in his mercies through the merits of my redeemer and my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor herein after mentioned and as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased god to bless me with I dispose thereof as follows first I give and bequeath unto my cousin Susanna Dean the wife of mr Jn Dean the elder of Fordham in the county of Essex farmer the sum of 20li of lawful money of Great Britain I also give unto my cousin Mary Dickinson the daughter of the said Susanna Dean the sum of 5li of lawful money as also the sum of 5li to Jn son of the said Jn Dean to be paid them severally within two years next after my decease by my executor after named also I give and bequeath unto my cousin Mary Shipman the wife of Jn Shipman of Brightlingsea in the county aforesaid the sum of 5li of lawful British money to be paid within one year after my decease also I give unto her daughter my cousin Mary Shipman of Sudbury the sum of 20li to be paid within two years after my decease also I give and bequeath unto my cousin Mary the wife of Wm Gosslyn of Horsely the sum of 5li to be paid within one year after my decease also I bequeath unto my cousin Wm Potter and to his sister Eliz of Wakes Colne and to my cousin Eliz daughter of my cousin Jn Potter deceased each of them a ring value 20s and to my cousin Eliz sister to Wm Potter above named I give my diamond ring enamelled with black these rings immediately after my decease also I give and bequeath unto my good friend mrs Ann Bernard wife of the rev mr Thos Bernard of Earls Colne the sum of 5li I also give unto her four daughters Margt Ann Eliz and Bridget each of them 5li to be paid them within one year after my decease and in case any of these last five mentioned legatees shall depart this life before her or their prospective legacy or legacies of her or them so dying to be equally divided and shared to and amongst the survivors or survivor of them also I give and bequeath unto my cousin Mary Goodhall daughter of Thos Goodhall of Abberton Hall the sum of 5li and in case the said Mary shall die before my decease then I give the said 5li to be paid to her mother within two years after my decease also I give and bequeath to my cousin Mary Hawes the wife of Jn Hawes of West Mersey oyster dredger the sum of 2gns if she shall outlive me but if not then I give the said 2gns to my goddaughter Mary Hawes to be paid within one year after my decease also I give unto my nephew Geo Johnson of Colchester bricklayer the sum of 5li to be paid him within two years after my decease and to his daughter Mary Johnson I give and bequeath my bedstead and the hangings of my bed as they are now standing at his house in Colchester and whatsoever monies my nephew Geo Johnson shall have of mine in his hands upon bond mortgage or otherwise at the time of my decease my mind and will is that he shall not be obliged to pay the same till two years after my decease nor to pay any interest for the same during that time also I give and bequeath to Eliz Bird daughter of Jn Bird of Stone Street in Boxford in the county of Suffolk butcher lately deceased the sum of 2gns to be paid her within one year after my decease also I give and bequeath unto my cousin Mary Shipman of Sudbury abovementioned one half part of my clothes and the other half part of my clothes and all my wearing linen I give to be equally divided between my goddaughter Mary Hawes of West Mersey and Mary Hawes daughter of my cousin Martha Hawes of Mersey aforesaid also I give unto the poor of the parish of Wakes Colne the sum of 50s to be disposed and distributed by my executor at his discretion and as soon as may be with convenience lastly all the rest and residue of my real and personal estate wheresoever and whatsoever herein unbequeathed after payment of my just debts legacies and funeral charges and the probate of this my will I give and devise unto my cousin Jas Dean of Wakes Colne aforesaid farmer and to his heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby declare this to be my last will and testament and do appoint my said cousin Jas Dean to be full and sole executor thereof in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written signed sealed and delivered in the presence of Josh Dawson Thos Bernard jun Mary Newman
