A crude female statue, Laisong village. Stone sculpture is rare among the Naga tribes. This, and a stone elephant are the only examples known to me among the Nzemi. They may possibly have been inspired by the stone sculptures of the Kacharis. This female figure was carved by the young men at the dying request of the man on whose memorial it stands. It is intended to show future generations what kind of woman he loved in his youth. The lad sitting by it is the grandson of the village priest. |
