Half a mile from the road and commanding a vast view is a field rest-house. This is on the same plan as 'the singing shed' in Khonoma and was put up in 1945 by the Viyema Khel. The former shed which is illustrated in the 'Angami Nagas' p. 46, had a massive thatched roof. Large protruding horns decorated gables and a massive centre post with carvings of three human heads and three huge mithan horns. The present shed is more up to date. There are no longer any carvings. The roof is of tin and the only decoration is a frieze which runs along the barge-boards. The colours are mainly black and white and the objects depicted are mithan horns, shields, spears, the chest badge of a head-hunter and circular suns. A stone plaque by the entrance states that the shed and its erection ceremonies cost Rs.500/-. Although the shed was made by only one of three Khels, it is open to any of them to use it and on genna days when the village is closed to outsiders, it serves as a halting place for strangers. |
