Today I took the Government Jeep and went to Jakhama and Kigwema. Great clouds were billowing over the hills and when the sun went in an icy wind came sharply off the slopes. |

Jakhama and Kigwema form a group with certain others and are known as Southern Angamis. Khonoma, Jotsoma, Mezoma and a few others are western, while Kohima and a group of over 16 villages are Central and Northern. To the east is a tract of fifty or so villages and these are known as Eastern. (6) |

Every group is slightly different and even within the groups usage often differs from village to village. Within the village the basic unit is the Khel and it is the Khel rather than the village which claims first loyalty. |

Jakhama lies a mile from the Manipur road, and the path goes steeply down a series of terraced rice fields. There was not much doing in the fields but we met strings of women making for the higher uplands which lie in the hills beyond the road. |
