visit to Jakhama and Kigwema |

Throughout the village a great deal of house building is going on. Thatched roofs are being replaced with corrugated iron and each new roof is costing roughly Rs.500/-. I was told that the main reason is that corrugated iron does not leak whereas thatch is always needing repairs, and often catches fire. Although the materials are new, the houses are all to the same traditional design. Unlike Khonoma decorated frontal planks are everywhere in evidence and even when the roof is of tin, many barge-boards have sprouted into great 'house-horns'. |
