text: The ascent is exceedingly steep and after toiling for two hours, I was not surprised to learn that Dr. Hutton during his service as Deputy Commissioner had visited the village only twice. A retired dobashi remembered both these visits very clearly and said 'Hutton Sahib was very popular. He knew our law. All his decisions were right.' Zakivelia, dobashi of Khonoma, also remembered him. 'I was only a little boy' he told me, 'when Hutton sahib came to our village. He threw stones at us and made a growling noise. So all of us ran away. But it was all in fun.'
