The gates vary greatly in age and since fighting raged all round the village it is surprising that they still exist. A gate belonging to the Dapfetsuma Khel was cut in two by Japs and used in a trench. When the fighting was over the Khel salvaged it and after fastening the pieces with iron slats they mounted it in its old position. The gates are on the usual massive scale but I noticed the following new points. In some cases, a cock, a hand and even a foot are included in the subjects depicted while owing to the shortage of big timber, several gates are made of two planks instead of the customary one. In one gate, the spears are made of tin and are nailed into the wood. (23) |
