(36) In the village itself a great deal of weaving was in progress. The women sit at their doors with legs and thighs bared to the sun. A portable loom is set up and while one end is tied to a post, the other is attached to the waist. Most of the cloth was white with black and orange borders but one girl was weaving a scarf for the sakrengi festival. The scarf which is six inches wide contains a diamond shaped pattern in red and green and is worn by young men as part of their ceremonial dress. The pattern at first sight looks simply a piece of decorative geometry but I was told that in actual fact it is a representation of spears. |
