The usual plan is to start with several lines of heads, then some warriors' tails, then more heads and finally a mithan's horns. Between two pillars is a broad platform made of planks. These are loosely laid 'so that if a stranger comes they will make a knocking noise and give away his presence'. Beyond the second pillar is the dormitory proper. Plank beds line the two walls and fires are lit between them. Rengma boys join the morungs as soon as they are striplings and their sisters are sent to girls' houses about the same time. The latter dormitories are held in private houses. If a boy stays at home, a gaonbura told me he will only drink rice-beer. 'We send him to the morung to make a man of him'. No girl may on any account enter a boys' morung. |
