text: The new puthi and a retired gaonbura, Khenbemo, are remarkable for having more than one wife; the puthi has two and the gaonbura three. In the latter's house, two wives were busy cooking while the juniormost sat weaving at the door. As noted by Mills, the house has three cubicles each with a fireplace and I was told that irrespective of whether he also slept with his second or third wife the gaonbura is obliged by etiquette and custom to commence each night by going to his first.
text: In the night some gaonburas of Tsumti (sic) came to see me. They have decided to ban all unions between christian and non-christian and to fine fifty rupees anyone who breaks the rule.
