Some distance to the south of the cemetery is the house of Lima, the dobashi. This was built nine years ago and although he had not performed the mithan sacrifice, the village decided to award him carvings. There is now a horizontal beam containing (from left to right) figures of two snakes, a head, a tiger, a tortoise, a hornbill, a hornbill (sic), a lizard and a head, while a massive pillar rises in the centre. This contains (from top to bottom) two monkeys, a huge tiger, another tiger and two firearms crossed. The beam and pillar took 4 days to carve in the forest and 50 men and boys assisted. All of them were genna for six days. When the carving was finished more than 200 villagers pulled them in and Lima feasted them with a buffalo and 5 cows. At the feast he marked each carving with blood from the slaughtered animals. |
