Charles Stonor had commissioned a carving from him in 1946 and had given him Rs 10 as advance payment for a sacrificial pig. There is still considerable village prejudice against his carving - Stonor's dobashi fell ill the same day as he had interpreted Stonor's instructions and never recovered. Shortly afterwards there was an epidemic in the village which carried off more than 20 persons. Mauwang had none the less done the carving - 2 hornbills between 2 monkeys - very well executed and designed but a little prosaic. |
