grave effigies and head-taking |

Kohima. Grave effigies. The former custom was to erect one on the grave of every head-taker and then after one year to dismantle it. Nowadays no head-takers and therefore no effigies. |

Konsika (D.C.'s pandit?) saw one 30 years ago when his grand uncle Yienyu died. Yienyu was a famous warrior who had taken more than 50 heads and had captured one slave. He used to go about with a little carved figure - the image of the slave boy - the figure had a handle for being carried by. When he died an effigy with rows of wooden heads was set up. 20 years ago Krusihu saw another figure - that of Nurhemo (Yienyu's son) - also a great warrior. |
