15th May '47. To Phek - 54 miles (10a.m. - 4p.m.) The old suspension bridge at the 15th mile should be repaired to take jeep traffic as the temporary bridge will be washed away in June. This will not cost very much. |

Something must be done quickly about the 9th mile bridge which is sure to go during the first heavy rain. |

The rest of the jeep track is good. A few minor repairs to small bridges are needed. |

The area under potatoes this year is greater than ever before. Most of the big villages estimate the crop at 10,000 mds., probably exaggerated, but anyhow the crop will be very heavy and arrangements for extra petrol to get it out will have to be made at once. Bihar merchants buy the small potatoes for seed and land has been alloted for each sub tribe to make godowns at Manipur Road to market Co-operatively to these merchants who of course would dearly love to come into the hills and advance money so as to get the crop for next to nothing. |
