...To get to Assam you go from Sealdah Station in Calcutta. To get to Shillong you take the Shillong Mail to Amingaon, with one change from broad to narrow guage. At Amingaon a railway ferry takes you across the Brahmaputra to Pandu, whence a service of cars takes you up to Shillong. If you are going on up the valley you get into the train at Pandu. For Mokokchung railhead is Nakachari. I believe you can now go by bus some distance from there. Anyhow, at the foot of the hills you begin marching, the villages being Lakhuni, Chongliyimsen (heavenly view), Chungtia, & Mokokchung. There are bungalows at all stages, but you need your own cooking arrangements. Porters carry your loads, which should not weigh more than 60lbs each. The present Addl. D.C. Rai Bahadur H. Blah, will help in every way with arrangements. Plans to put a motor road through this cold-weather are in hand. Blah is stationed at Mokokchung. The D.C. at Kohima is P.F. Adams M.B.E., I.C.S. He is acting till Pawsey gets back in December. |

I would suggest that you ask Blah to get vegetable and flower seeds in ready for you. The garden at Mokokchung is excellent, but probably badly let down. (Blah is lazy and has gone to seed, but we have had no one to replace him). If you are a fisherman (mahseer) bring tackle. I'll write about work later, as the political situation changes almost daily. Nehru has issued a very reasonable statement about Nagas needing special treatment. |
