text: 2nd March
text: Dear Dr Hutton,
text: .....I am writing this from Longkhai and wishing all the time that I could dip down into the valley and start to see Longmein, Chi and Mon. The Tsawlaw expedition was cancelled and so I took over at Mokokchung on 4th March. There is talk of packing all the Konyaks into Tirap Frontier Tract so I hurried over to Wakching to see them while I could. Head-hunting of course is still quite active and even at Wangla, they told me they would take a head next year when the new Ang got married and they hawled in a new log-drum. Oting, however, seems to have accepted the ban for recently all the young men of a morung qualified for face-tattoos by going on a symbolic raid to Sh[]. They did not take a head, did not even try for one but earned the tattoo by going across enemy land, dancing in a friendly village and coming back. Everyone is now awaiting 1948; and the Konyaks at any rate aren't standing any Congress Raj!
text: ...I leave Longkhai tomorrow and will try to get this letter off from Borjan.
