He owed this dramatic turn in his career to a chance talk with Christoph von-Furer Haimendorf, the brilliant young Austrian anthropologist who had visited the Naga Hills in 1936-7 and published in 1939 his gripping travel book, The Naked Nagas. Christoph was all set to continue his researches in tribal India when the advent of war in 1939 had led, because of his nationality, to internment. Wisdom in high places however had prevailed and through Sir Theodore Tasker, Christoph was thus able to continue his researches subject only to the restriction of his movements to Hyderabad - researches which were later to appear in a number of important monographs. |
