text: | Some of the Christian women had skirts and shapeless blouses, but the rest were naked above the waist and wore knee-length tightly swathed skirts. With their pale coffee-cream skin, narrow eyes, straight black hair smoothed to a low bun and their blue and crimson tufted skirts, they were a comely sight. As they passed, their cornelian and white shell necklaces jangled on their breasts and they turned and gave us arch smiles. |
