feasts of merit, house carvings and mithan horns |
text: |
The house of a rich Angami advertises the status of its owner. The front is made of wooden boards and as he performs the various feasts of merit, so symbols of mithan horns are carved in relief on the wood. They are like the badges on a scout's sleeve, each one represents some qualification. When a man has performed a certain number of feasts, he adds great wooden horns on his roof above the pointed thatch, just as a scout adds a first class badge. These horns stand out stark and grim against the sky. |
