Inside the houses have three compartments. The front one contains a rice-pounding bench shaped like a boat with a keel underneath and four or five holes for pounding. Huge baskets five to eight feet high are ranged against the wall. (69) The Angamis, unlike the other tribes, keep all their grain in the house instead of in granaries well away from the village. In the second compartment is the hearth and beds, and in the small back section is the great rice-beer vat cut from a vast section of a tree. We saw one village hacking these vats from enormous tree trunks. |
