Eastern Angami women's dress |

I had seen Eastern Angami men in Kohima, but I had not seen the women. They wear a kind of bodice made by crossing a red- edged blue cloth from under one arm to the opposite shoulder. Sometimes it is a white cloth with a black stripe. Their skirt is a knee length cloth wrapper round the waist with the end tucked in. The unmarried girls wear a black skirt with a wide white stripe embroidered in orange. They also have their hair shaved and as it grows it looks like an Eton crop. But the married women wear it hanging down their backs in a short tail. They wear a huge brass ring through the top of each ear supported by a string over the top of the head. Their hair is smoothed down from a centre parting and looks trim and neat. They wear large black, white and red necklaces like the men and strange brass armlets with the ends bent outwards away from each other. They are as charming and pretty as the Aos. |
