Very few English women can have passed along this road. At every bungalow the women and children stand on the banks and gaze at me with absorbed and wondering eyes. This afternoon as I sat writing letters, two women invaded the room, fingered my Aertex shirt, felt the blankets, gazed at the mosquito nets (70) and inspected my shoes. Then they went quietly away. |
