inspection bungalows destroyed by Japanese |
text: |
As we get nearer the frontier, traces of fighting become more evident. Each bungalow has been damaged or destroyed by the Japs - Chakhabama, Kekrima, Pfutsero, Chizami, Losami and Phek. If the bungalow was well hidden by trees, as at Chakhabama, the Japs occupied it, using the furniture as fuel. But at Pfutsero the building was on an exposed hill, so they tore it down and used the material to make huts among the trees. During the three years since the war, the (71) bungalows have been gradually repaired, but earlier in the year, Bill says, he saw great holes in the walls and Jap graffiti on the plaster. Even now many of the windows are unglazed and filled with bullet-pocked tin. Here at Phek the bungalow was shattered by bombing and it is still under repair. We have had to hang groundsheets over the empty windows and fill the gaping doors with corrugated iron to keep out the wind and rain. |
