text: When Bill returned, he too had the drowsy ache, the tingling in his legs, thighs and wrists which marks the onset of fever. So we both lay in bed taking Paludrine and inventing New Statesmen competitions.
text: The days and nights drifted by with wild dreams. In the country, when one lies awake, the night is full of noise. A town, once the traffic has stopped, is far more silent. I listened to mithan lowing, moths fluttering, great beetles droning and bumping on the ceiling, grasshoppers creaking, birds stirring in the trees and water gurgling in the bamboo pipes by the village.
