text: | Near the village boundary where the path forked to the fields, a small bamboo had been erected. Two wads of cotton wool and a piece of ginger had been hung on it and the headman said it was a trick to dupe the evil spirits. 'The spirit will think,' he said, 'that we have left our souls behind in the village. He will go rushing back and then we can go safely to the fields to work and no one will fall ill.' |
