text: As we rested, Chang girls toiled up to the village with threshed rice. Their dark brown conical baskets were full of yellow grain. As they struggled up the hill they intoned a rich and lilting chant. They wore bright blue and scarlet skirts woven with broken lines and chevrons. In their ears were mauve orchids and yellow cosmos. Their bodies were bare above the waist except for strings of scarlet beads and great circles of shell. With their fair and jolly faces they might have been first cousins of the Aos. (111)
