At the end of the village is a large school - amply staffed and sufficiently well equipped. But there is something radically wrong with Naga education. 'Art lessons' are particularly monotonous. The children draw nothing but (117) cucumbers and pumpkins. We suggested scenes from village life; the building of a morung, the ringing of a tiger, a village fire, but the suggestion produced nothing but innocent amazement. As a compromise we asked the children to draw a mithan. The girls could produce nothing but merely rubbed away at their slates and bent their heads in shame. This seemed to me the more odd for in England small girls show greater interest in drawing than boys. A few children, however, drew very well. There was one small boy who held up his slate with a mithan drawn in a single unbroken swinging line. |
