text: The evening passed in talking to headmen and villagers. Bill suggested that the next morning, before setting off on our march, we should go to Lungtrok, a place sacred to the Aos and only three miles away. Here there are six large stones from which the Ao and Phom tribes have their legendary origin. But it was clear that Chuba, the Sangtam interpreter, as well as the villagers were doing their best to dissuade us from going. When we appeared persistent they eventually confessed that if we went at this time of year before the harvest was in and 'disturbed' the stones, then a great wind and rain would come and devastate the remainder of the harvest. Even the sacrifice of a pig or bullock would not counteract this calamity.
text: Later in the year we could go, they said, but not now.
