text: We did not hurry off this morning and I sat by the hut watching the packing. It amazes me that our possessions arrive each day in apple-pie order when so many ill-assorted objects are crammed into the joppas together. The petromax lantern with its fragile mantle is swathed in mosquito nets. Kerosene is combined with tinned meat and a mackintosh; books are thrown in with shoes and shaving kit. At the last moment Zokutov always rushes up with an enamel bowl or a bundle of (128) vegetables which are somehow inserted into the over-flowing baskets.
