poverty in the Trans-frontier region |
text: |
Before leaving Chingmiren this morning, the headmen were (139) insistent that we should visit their houses. The rice-beer in this village made from Job's Tears is very thin and I suspect these transfrontier people are very poor. The Changs seem to start work much later than the other tribes. At eight o'clock the men were all sitting outside their houses sucking rice-beer from bamboo tankards through bamboo 'straws' and Chuba says they will not go to the fields until midday. This also suggests that their cultivation is poor and there is less work to be done than in the richer areas. |
