explaining about the new Sub-division at Tuensang |
text: |
All the afternoon I have felt like an animal at the zoo. We sit in front of the hut and the crowd presses against the palisade, staring and staring. The interpreters say that there is a bigger crowd here than ever before as many have come just to look at me. One by one the villagers enter the stockade to see Bill and he tells them about the new subdivision and that raids must cease. Each village presents a chicken and a dao. Then Pangsha came in and after a short lecture on their misdoings, peace was made. They gave their thumb impressions, swore they would take no more heads and drank rum with Bill. They grinned ruefully and I very much doubt whether this is really the end of their insolent swaggering. But they cannot have enjoyed this visit, for many of their enemies are here and are laughing at the fine. |
