text: During the afternoon a large mithan was brought by the Chang tribal council and slaughtered. It has been carefully divided out between the whole camp and we have got the tail for soup and a piece of rump steak. The sepoys have got a goat and the porters a pig in addition to the mithan and chickens, so we shall all feed well tonight.
text: Tuensang lies in a hollow with the mountains encircling (141) it. As night fell the crowd thinned. The hills lay dark against a blue and silver sky which slowly dimmed to jet black. Fires have sprung up all round the camp, the red flames rising in tall pillars. Groups of wild figures are hunched around them, black against the glow. After the noise and bustle of the afternoon, all seems suddenly quiet and still.
