The morungs like the houses have high sloping roofs and wooden hornbills, fish and chains of bamboo rings dangle from the eaves. The Chang morungs are not used for sleeping but are the drum and skull houses. (145) Tuensang had many morungs, the pillars carved with with leopards, human figures, heads, mithan horns, hornbills and monkeys. The Morungs were fulls of skulls and strings of basket balls, the tallies of raids. Similar basket balls hung on the houses and the graves. On the outskirts of each clan was the head-tree supporting the bamboos from which dangled the new skulls. Some of them had only recently been taken. Grass tassels flowed from the black dried heads with sunken closed eyes, while on others horns had been affixed. |
