Tonight after dark we had a feast to celebrate the end of the tour. Porters, sepoys, servants and ourselves all sat out under the moon round a huge wood fire eating a Naga dinner of rice, pork, fish, rice-beer and rum. Everyone grew increasingly cheerful as the evening drew on and the Nagas began to sing and then the Gurkhas. The Nagas did war dances, leaping round the fire and shaking their crimson spears. The Gurkhas danced too while we clapped the rhythm and gave Naga whoops. Soon the Subahdar had joined in and was hopping up and down in the circle like a small robin. Everyone seems sad the expedition is over. |
