Thevo's house with beautiful carvings and grave |

Thevo's house. The house of the Thevo is big and has a beautifully carved front although it has no house horns. On several planks are stylized human heads, the sign of headhunters. The father of the present Thevo captured several heads. In other villages, Thenizumi and Pfesa-Chadumi, the Thevo is not allowed to participate in warfare. Not far from the house is the grave of a Thevo built with big stones. I photographed both. On several houses one can observe a distinctive change in the forms of carved mithan heads. The oldest form is highly stylised, the recent one far more naturalistic and simpler. (50) Both forms can be found on one house, on old and new planks next to each other. Nowadays apparently, only the new style of mithan head is carved. |
