I started at quarter to seven together with Nlamo and a sepoy plus pony. It was a wonderful fresh morning and walking was a pure joy. After one and a half miles on the road to Dimapur the bridle path goes off to the left and leads along a mountain slope, mostly between jhum fields and irrigated rice terraces which fill entire hollows on the mountain side. Apparently water is available here in abundance. It gushes through canals as strongly as a small mill stream. It distributes itself over the terraces. It is conducted further in bamboo pipes and in some parts it even pours across the path. In many fields the rice plants are already about twenty centimetres high and they glitter in the sun with their pale tender green. The weather was brilliant. |
