Borjan 22/7/1936. (128) A cloud burst and heavy storm woke me up early in the morning. The night has not been very restful as rats kept up their mischief in our room, but when we want to leave the rain has stopped. I leave with seven coolies, four are supposed to go directly to Wakching, the others go with us to Borjan. The decline into the Dikhu Valley is steep passed fields where the rice begins to turn yellow. In the valley the trail goes along the river through moist, lush jungle. Last nights rain has caused parts of the trail to be submerged under water. The Dikhu has risen high and carries dirty brown floods. Right next to us the screams of the huluk sound from the branches but we cannot see any. Once we heard a crash directly below us and I already was afraid that we were to come across some elephants. Then we saw two serows flee through the bushes. |
