(179) Wakching 12/8/1936. Originally I wanted to go to Shiong today, however already in the morning the Ang of Chi showed up with a great retinue to greet me and he brought me a goat as a salaam. Of course I now couldn't leave him sitting there by himself and so I sent Ahon to Shiong. The Ang of Chi is a great lord and true autocrat. His features are less refined than those of the Ang of Zu-nyu, but his appearance has a calm dignity. Of tall stature and strong build he towers over his surroundings in physical aspects as well, although he is barely distinguished by dress and ornament. His hair which is tightly knotted at the back is held together with a moderately wide plaited ribbon. Over it he usually puts a plaited cap covered with red goat's hair. A tall bunch of human hair is fastened to it with two boars' tusks in front and a small mirror in the centre. His neck is decorated with a roll of orange and black beaded strings to which a brass mask is attached of the sort that is traded from the plains. Under his blue coat he only wears a rattan belt and a small plain blue loin cloth. Red rattan rings and a band of light plaiting cover his legs below the knees. (film 22) |
