government asked to arbitrate in feuds between Totok and Chi |

Before the Ang finally went home he asked me through Ahom to inform Mr Mills about the fight with Totok and to clarify Chi's point of view in this. After Chi and Totok had only recently committed themselves in front of the government to peaceful relations, people of Totok attacked some men from Chi on Chi fields, and injured three, partly with daos and partly with guns. This happened while Mills and I were on our way to Mokokchung. Now Chi requests Totok's punishment and says that if the government does not support Chi they would no longer feel bound to the treaty and would move towards Totok themselves. I promised to take the matter up with Mills and I wrote him in the evening. (184) Early in the afternoon the people from Chi went home after I had agreed to get a cartridge box for the Ang for which he would give me a gong. Just when the Ang was leaving a big bird of prey was circling above the bungalow. I fired a shot at it but missed. The feasts of merit for Chi I only want to write down when I have gathered all the material. |
