text: Late at night there was a knock at the window and when I went out to see what was the matter there was a suspicious looking man in front of me but he soon turned out to be a familiar opium eater from Kongan. He offered me a multi-stringed necklace of those yellowish-brown stones which the Nagas call spirit beads. Their origin is not quite certain. He claimed that it was a very old piece. As the price was moderate I bought it. Then I spent some time talking with the man who makes a miserable impression and apparently spends all his money on opium.
