customs at rice harvest in Tanhai |

(249) In the afternoon came the old gaonbura of Tanhai, Sho-bong, who is a particularly interesting person. First I asked him about the Ou-nie-bu in Tanhai. It is held unfortunately on the same day as in Wakching but there not only one man goes to the fields to get the first rice but the entire village. But here too there is one man, the Dunong-ba of the Yingam clan, who is the first to build his field house. The office is inherited and the ancestor of the present Dunong-ba, Mekshin, is supposed to have founded Tanhai. The Tanhai people also have the tradition of having come across the Brahmaputra and then along the Dikhu. |
