In the morning Dr Veiyera went to Borjan and although his company during these rainy days and enforced inactivity has been pleasant I now am glad to be alone again. In the morning Apong came over from Wanching. (26) I asked him about the tribute paid by other villages to Wanching. (notebook 5 p. 31 following.) About seventeen villages pay tribute to the Ang of Wanching. Most of them only a little but some pay considerable amounts, for example Nian and Yang-am who give rice and fish as well as a piece of meat from every household during the Ou-ling-bu. The Bala morung of Wakching annually works for one day on the fields of the Ang of Wanching. Wanching itself does not pay any tribute. The three morungs, Balang, Bala and Totang have far more active visiting arrangements with other villages than Dzim-shi and Pandzong who only visit with one village. (notebook 5 p. 38 & 39). |
