unmarried daughter of Ang |

In the meantime the unmarried daughter of the Ang came loaded with ornaments but clad with only a very narrow apron, she sat near the fire. Coincidentally I was just asking about the bride price and also what a man would have to pay for the daughter of an Ang. This suddenly caused great merriment (95) as it seemed as though I thought of marrying the Ang daughter myself and made enquiries about the price. I carried the joke further and counted up all the gongs, layas, daos and spears which I had in my bungalow and could offer for the girl. The Ang daughter was embarrassed and withdrew while her girlfriends who had come from the fields with her could hardly stop laughing. But apparently the joke had its effect as for the late evening I was invited to come into the girls 'morung' in the Ang house where the girls wanted to sing. |
