marriage rules for Ang's daughters |
text: |
The two daughters of the Ang however are not allowed such liberties as they are supposed to marry Angs of other villages. They both are of marriageable age and create a certain embarrassment for the Ang. The only villages where there are Ang families of equal rank to Oting's without being of the same clan and therefore unsuitable for marriage as is the case with Wangla and Lunglam are Punkhung and Hungphoi. In neither there are marriageable sons. Mon is "of the same clan" and in addition Oting is not equal to the great Ang family there. The Oting Ang clan is "Ang-haba" but looks down upon the Ang's of Wakching, Wanching and Kongan. Of course the Ang daughters could marry Ben men from Oting. This happens sometimes but this would not be a very glorious solution and the Angs also (105) like to strengthen their connection to other villages by forming alliances. |
