I had decided to go early into the village as then the Mon people would spear their pig. Indeed I was at the Ding-don morung at seven o' clock where several young men were sitting but nothing in particular seemed to be happening. Then suddenly the men from Mon carried up a fairly large pig. Their spears were still bloody and one spear tip was very bent. According to custom they have the right to spear any one pig in the khel whose morung Ang had died and the unfortunate owner is not compensated by any one for its loss. Today the guests were not wearing their magnificent headdresses and even the Ang was barely distinguishable apart from his blue Ao cloth, but he did sit on his own little mat on the morung platform, although this is made of smooth bamboo-work. |
