Towards evening I asked Medzou about the Neangbas as I'm working on an article on the morung system etc. and am realizing that I'm not altogether clear about the Neangbas. Altogether there are ten including the Ang Chinkak who form a council which settles disputes and sets fines. In addition it also decides which land is to be planted the coming year following an egg divination. This oracle is done by Shung-ga, a man from Chi who came together with the Chi Ang and who also is a Neangba. No one else dares to perform this dangerous divination. Only the Neangbas of Balang and Oukheang have special functions. |
