text: I measured one of the great slit drums. Its length is 10 metres. The diameter 1 metre. In the evening some men played and sang in my honour. The beating of the drum is very different from the Konyak. Heavy beams which are leaning against the drum are hit against it, partly by boys who were perched on top of the drum and only one or two people use actual sticks. The singing is pleasant to our ear (178) and reminds me somewhat of solemn Russian choral songs.
